!!!!IMPORTANT!!!! We've decided to postpone this trip. Please stay tuned, and hang tight for the dates and updated details.

Why Japan??? My partner Matt and I stumbled upon Niseko in 2020 while chasing after our snow obsession. We've made it a yearly thing ever since Japan re-opened its doors to visitors... In fact, we were there for February in 2023, all of January and February in 2024, and more in 2025. But you know what's cool?? We've found out that Hokkaido has way more to offer than just awesome powder.

In summer 2024, we decided to switch things up and explore what Niseko had to offer when it's not buried under snow. We spent a whole month checking out all the rad, warm-weather activities in the area: hiking, biking, paddling, and soaking up the culture, not to mention relaxing in onsens and stuffing our faces with amazing food.

Now, here's the kicker: We've had a bunch of friends hitting us up, wanting to tag along on our adventures. So, we thought, why not make life easy for everyone? We've put together this eight-day yoga-adventure retreat, packed with all our favorite spots and experiences. Who's in?! 🙌

Where You'll Be Staying

Kanro No Mori is a nature-based resort ideally located near the Moiwa chairlifts on the west side of Niseko Ski Area, right in the middle of an active geothermal hot spring basin. During the summer, this is the perfect base from which to enjoy a wide range of adventures and natural sites, all conveniently located within an hour’s drive. Throw in a spacious yoga/tatami room, friendly staff, onsite onsen (Japanese geothermal hot spring, sauna, cold plunge, and gym), and delicious Japanese/Western breakfast and dinner buffets, and you have everything you need to enjoy a week exploring the west side of Hokkaido.

What's Included

  • 8 days with your adventure guides, Kilty and Matt
  • 7 nights of comfy hotel accommodation
  • 3x daily fresh meals in local restaurants or at our hotel
  • Daily yoga + meditation
  • Daily visits to our favorite onsens in the area (a different one each day!), plus extra onsen time at Kanro No Mori***

  • Full day excursion to the Sea of Japan for a blue cave kayak adventure, coastal hike, and incredible sushi
  • SUP in Lake Toya National Park and gondola ride to the top of Mt. Usu
  • Mountain bike on single-track trails of Futagoyama Mountain
  • Road bike around the famous Mt. Yotei (the “Mt. Fuji of Hokkaido”)
  • Hike up Mount Niseko Annupuri and to Onuma Swamp
  • Learn to cook Japanese cuisine

  • All entry fees for the above sights and additional activities as listed on the itinerary

***As part of Japanese culture, bathing suits are not allowed in onsens (don’t worry—the men’s and women’s sides are separate!). While this is a new experience for many people, it’s one that we find to be super enjoyable, and we encourage you to join in. However, if you are uncomfortable and would prefer not to participate, there are a limited number of deluxe rooms with private onsens available at the resort at a higher price point.

What's Not Included

  • International flights to New Chitose Airport (CTS)
  • Any video or still camera fees assessed by the monuments or places of interest
  • Alcohol
  • Tips/gratuities
  • Personal items (souvenirs, spa services, etc)
  • Travel Insurance (recommended)

Agenda

We start our adventure by flying into New Chitose Airport, located near Sapporo, Hokkaido. From there, we’ll enjoy a beautiful, two-hour drive to Niseko, which is Asia’s largest ski resort area, set amongst a range of 4,000-foot mountain peaks surrounded by peaceful farmland. Once we check into our resort, we’ll wash off the travel with a visit to the onsite onsen, followed by a restorative yoga class and buffet dinner, complete with sashimi and Japanese hot pot (don’t worry, there are LOTS of veggie options, too!).

Every day for the next week, we will meet for breakfast before exploring the mountains, lakes, and coastline surrounding Niseko. Each morning, we’ll enjoy the area’s most beautiful vistas and best adventures, ranging from hiking mountain peaks and riding bikes around a volcano to paddling excursions on Lake Toya and the Sea of Japan—not to mention sampling treats at local secret spots (including the best tofu, pastries, ice cream, and hot chocolate of your life!) and partaking in an authentic Japanese cooking class.

Each day’s activities will be followed by lunch at our favorite restaurants in the area, an hour (or two!) luxuriating in Niseko’s best onsens, and a late-afternoon yoga class with Kilty. Finally, after sharing dinner at the resort,  you are free to enjoy the onsite onsen for as long as you want (trust us, this will become a mandatory part of your daily routine in no time!).

Finally, as our week comes to a close, we’ll drive back to New Chitose Airport to start the journey home, stopping on the way for one last tasty treat (actually, lots of them!) at the area’s famous Mushroom Kingdom.

Other Things to Know

What is the level of physical activity on this retreat?
This is an active retreat, so you’ll definitely be getting some movement! While our adventures won’t be overly intense—you don’t have to be a dedicated athlete to enjoy them—they will involve a few hours of activity per day. In other words, if you are looking for a retreat that’s all sunbathing and no sweating, then this one might not be for you. That being said, we will do our best to accommodate different fitness levels, and you are always free to sit one out if you are uncomfortable with the day’s activity or want a day of full rest.

Will dietary requests be accommodated?
While vegetarian options will be available at nearly all of our meals, Japan isn’t the easiest place to follow a vegan diet—especially if you want to fully immerse yourself in the local culture. For those who have special diets that aren’t medically required, we suggest adopting a “flexitarian” philosophy for the week. The island of Hokkaido is essentially one huge farm (it produces a significant percentage of the country’s food), so the dairy, seafood, and even meat in Hokkaido are as fresh and healthy as you are going to find. If there was ever a time to step out of your comfort zone and try something new, this is it!

What airport do I fly into?
We will pick you up from New Chitose Airport (CTS) at 10a on August 25. For anyone arriving on the day prior, there are many convenient and affordable hotels near the airport. Be sure to search for hotels near CTS and not in Sapporo. Many hotels will provide a shuttle to the airport, but will require to you catch a taxi from the airport to the hotel. Also, make sure to select a smoking or non-smoking room (smoking cigarettes is still quite common in Japan).

To get to CTS, you will likely have to layover in Tokyo, which has two airports: Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT). The recent addition of Zip Air flights from Honolulu to Tokyo at incredibly low prices means that this is the best time ever to visit Japan. (Not to mention, the exchange rate is extremely favorable for the US dollar, at the moment.) If you are considering flying on Zip Air out of Honolulu, please note that the airline only flys to NRT, and you will have to book a domestic flight from NRT to CTS, separate from Zip Air. Otherwise, you can look to book your flights on a single itinerary through Hawaiian, ANA, United, JAL, and other airlines.

For your return home, we will drop you off at CTS by 12p. Please do not book a flight earlier than 2p.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, we definitely recommend insurance for traveling anywhere. We have used World Nomads, Seven Corners, IMG, Red Point and Travelex. Just be sure to check with your carrier about what is covered under your policy.

Do I need a special visa?

You will need a valid passport with at least one blank page. Your tourist visa will be issued upon arrival at the airport.

What is the weather like?
The temperature during the day will hover around a nice 25 °C (78 °F). At night, temperatures are around a pleasant 18 °C (65 °F). We will send you a packing list before departure, but you can anticipate similar humidity and weather to Hawaii.

Do I need a yoga mat, blocks, and a strap?
Yes, please bring your mat and a strap with you. If you have space, blocks are ideal, but we also know that they can be cumbersome to travel with. So, don't sweat it if you can't fit them.

How many people will be on this trip?
I find that having around 8 to 10 people feels full, yet intimate. We need a minimum of 5 people to make this trip financially viable. Once you sign up, please double check with us on the current numbers before purchasing any airline or hotel tickets. If we need to cancel this trip due to low enrollment, you'll receive a 100% full refund.
