I am honored to be one of Hawaii Yoga Institute's guest faculty members, and previously one of the lead faculty. As part of this program, I now assist and support trainings throughout the year. I value the vision and methodology of this school in cultivating teachers through the process of self reflection in an environment that's unlike many modern yoga spaces. My aim is to help teachers think critically and provide the tools that allow them to share the practice of yoga in a mindful and purposeful way based on personal experience and with respect to it's historical roots. This is not easy as it requires honest conversation around difficult topics like systems of oppression and cultural appropriation, but I believe cultivating this awareness is also a necessary component to sharing the practice yoga.

From Hawaii Yoga Institute:
"Hawai'i Yoga Institute, based in Hawai'i, was formed in 2013 and became a is a 501(c)(3) in 2016. HYI has a mission to provide nationally recognized yoga teacher training programs and continuing education courses that empower students and faculty to develop their unique yoga teaching style through service based yoga. HYI specifically reaches out to include students and faculty members who represent a strong diversity of race, class, gender, size, physical ability and spiritual traditions to inspire and empower them to model and teach skills for improving physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health for all people within their community.

"With a team of leaders and facilitators, with marginalized identities, Yoga is a way to remember our personal ancestral sciences and connect with our 'ike kūpuna (ancestral wisdom). Yoga is a way to remember who we are, in our perfect, divine forms. Yoga is a way to harness the prana (energetic force) of the lāhui (collective) that will lead us to collective liberation and the remembering of our interconnectedness. We do Yoga to ready ourselves for the revolutionary work of today as we prepare for the ancestors we are becoming."
